Former Feldhöölz nature reserve west of Stockum

The Feldgehölz nature reserve was located west of Stockum with a size of 3.3  hectares , west of Stockum in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan . When the Sundern landscape plan was re-established in 2019, the NSG status was no longer applicable and the area was assigned partly to the Sundern landscape protection area and partly to the peripheral landscape protection area and agricultural priority areas in the landscape between Amecke, Bruchhausen, Allendorf and Stockum .

description

The field is located directly north of the 686 road on a small hilltop in the middle of the intensively used agricultural landscape. Around the 1970s, spruces were planted on the shallow limestone site of the hill in the middle of a complex of hedges and bushes. so that in the meantime a closed field wood of predominantly non-native spruce has developed. Since the former hedges (partly with overhangs) are mainly located on the edge of the field wood, the edge structures appear to be close to nature. Some of the intensive grasslands adjacent to the woodland also belonged to the NSG.

In the north-eastern part of the NSG, in the area of an old limestone quarry, there was an elevated water tank from the Sundern municipal utility.

Protection purpose

According to the Sundern landscape plan, the following was designated:

  • "For the preservation of communities or habitats of certain wild plants and wild animal species,"
  • "For scientific, natural history, regional or geological reasons,"
  • "Because of the rarity, special character or outstanding beauty of an area or part of the landscape."

Loss of NSG status

The NSG was the only NSG in the city area of Sundern, which, from the point of view of voluntary nature conservation, was designated as early as 1993, for incomprehensible reasons, as it was already a closed field wood of predominantly alien tree species, especially spruce, without rare animal and plant species.
