Natural reserve fallow land in the Sorpetal 2014

The fallow land nature reserve in the Sorpetal, with a size of 0.3  ha, was located northwest of Wildewiese in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan . When the Sundern landscape plan was re-established in 2019, the NSG status was dropped and the area was added to the Upper Sorpetal landscape protection area between Hagen and Wildewiese .

Area description

The very small NSG with its moist fallow land lies in the valley floor of the upper Sorpe valley . In the north-east it is bordered by dense bushes and a forest path, in the south-west by a near-natural Sorpe section with wooded banks with alders. Without appropriate maintenance measures, the former wet grassland site has turned into a rather species-poor, humid high herbaceous field with meadowsweet and nettle dominance, e.g. Partly developed with bracken herds. At the time of designation, the area was referred to as a marsh flower meadow in the transition to the meadowsweet corridor. Before the designation, plant species such as true meadowsweet , flutter rush, flood swaths, common butterbur, common forest corn, common spring moss, common forest angelica, common hollow tooth, ear willow, turf willow, common willow, black alder, Black elder, swamp forget-me-nots, water mint and water dough mapped. In order to maintain and improve it, the commandment “The area is to be mowed every 3 years; the cuttings are to be removed ”is written into the landscape plan.

Protection purpose

As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. Specifically for the NSG was stated: "Through extensive management of the area, grassland communities worthy of protection should be restored and preserved."

Loss of NSG status

In 1993, the area was a spent Sumpfdotterblumen -Wiese in transition to Mädesüßflur . Since neither the Lower Nature Conservation Authority nor the voluntary nature protection authorities took care of a resumption of use, which would have been safe and possible in the 1990s, the meadow turned into a nettle corridor with bushes and lost its value as a NSG.
