The nature reserve Breloh with a size of 13.2  hectares lies between Amecke and Stockum in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) with an area of 12.3 hectares for the first time in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis . When the landscape planner Sundern was reorganized, the NSG was again identified and enlarged. The NSG borders directly to the north on the Illingheim industrial area and otherwise on the Sundern nature reserve .

Area description

The Breloh is a flat limestone ridge. In the northern part of the NSG there is a species-rich deciduous forest. This is where the wolf monkshood , forest yellow star and green hellebore are found . The southern part is used as a pasture and hay meadow. The tuberous buttercup can be found in the poor grassland areas . There are large old hedges around these grasslands.

Protection purpose

The NSG was established for the preservation of communities and habitats of certain wild plant and animal species, as well as for the protection of the nationally significant biotope with high development potential. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Protective measures

In spring 2014, the Hochsauerlandkreis Biological Station removed blackthorn and blackberry bushes from two areas with a brush cutter and chainsaw .

Protection purpose

In the NSG, the forest, the rocks, the rubble heaps and the former quarry with the respective species inventory are to be protected. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
