Nature reserve upper reaches of the Hellefeld brook

The nature reserve upper reaches of the Hellefelder Baches with 8.9  hectares is located northwest of Hellefeld in the urban area of Sundern and in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2019 with the Sundern landscape plan . It was previously designated as a Sundern nature reserve. The NSG goes to the city limits. The NSG is surrounded by a spruce forest which mostly belongs to the Sundern nature reserve .

The NSG is the upper reaches of the Hellefeld Bach and spring tributaries. Mostly it is spruce forests with spring hollows in notched valleys.

Protection purpose

According to the landscape plan, it was designated as:

  • "Protection of the near-natural stream sections and development by promoting deciduous forests accompanying the stream."
  • "The NSG also serves to sustainably secure habitats that are particularly worthy of protection according to § 30 BNatschG ."

A special requirement was issued for the NSG . The requirement is "existing coniferous wood is to be replanted at least in a width of 35 m on both sides from the middle of the water or from the embankment shoulder in the case of notched valleys and otherwise basically along the in nature comprehensible boundaries (paths, change of use, embankments, etc.) in locally appropriate hardwood."
