Upper Rümmecke nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The upper reaches of the Rümmecke nature reserve, with a size of 21.4  hectares, is located north of Hellefeld in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) with an area of 8.6 hectares by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan . When the Sundern landscape plan was reorganized, the NSG was again identified and enlarged. To the west is a former ammunition depot for the Belgian army and today's Hellefelder Höhe composting plant . The NSG is directly adjacent to the Sundern nature reserve . It goes in the east to the city limits of Arnsberg .

Area description

It is the upper course of the near-natural Rümmecke brook, which is mostly accompanied by an alder wood. In the source area of the Rümmecke there is a peat moss-alder quarry. The valley area on both sides of the stream outside the NSG is defined by spruce forests. Some spruces are also in the edge areas of the alder break in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the area with the species there. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
