Kalkbuchenwald nature reserve Selschede 2017 before designation

The nature reserve Kalkbuchenwald Selschede with 16.8  hectares is located south of the hamlet Selschede and west of Westenfeld in the urban area of Sundern and in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2019 with the Sundern landscape plan . Previously, the area was intended for the expansion of the quarry in Westenfeld without protection. In the east, the NSG borders directly on the Westenfelder quarry that is in operation. In the west, the NSG goes almost to the development of Sundern-Oberröhre. In the north and south there are mostly arable land.

description

The NSG is a woodruff beech forest on an elongated limestone ridge in an east-west direction. The woodruff beech forest is divided into several parts by spruce trees and a high-voltage line. The landscape plan explains the nature reserve: “On the terrain, which slopes more sharply to the north, old beech, dead beech and oak are found locally. The particularly species-rich herb layer of the beech forest is dense to closed. Especially on the hilltop location, the pearly grass that characterizes society forms a closed carpet of plants. The typical species of the woodruff beech forest can also be found in the partially thinned spruce stands both at the edge and inside the stand and show the ecological potential of these areas. In addition to protruding rock ribs in places, there are also smaller former excavations and debris deposits in the area. Individual holly can be found in the forest and are very dogged. Along the border in the north-west, the edge of the forest is formed over a long stretch by a wide, dense, species-rich hedge. "

In the NSG, which belongs to the Hellefeld Kalk , a species-rich snail fauna was detected.

Use of voluntary nature conservation for NSG designation

The Selschede lime beech forest was temporarily secured as a nature reserve in autumn 2008 by the Hochsauerlandkreis under pressure from voluntary nature conservation, more precisely the BUND- HSK and the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia had previously classified this area as worthy of nature protection. The area was originally intended to be used for the quarry expansion of the eastern quarry. In August 2016, the seizure finally expired after several extensions, as the maximum time for a seizure had been exceeded and the redesign of the Sundern landscape plan had not come into force. A third of the eastern part of the NSG was cleared and a large part of it was planted with spruce. In the remaining area, small trees and the ground vegetation were totally destroyed with heavy forest machines.

Protection purpose

According to the landscape plan, it was designated as:

  • "Protection, preservation and optimization of a species-rich beech-limestone forest with partly adjacent rock and its communities."
  • "The NSG also serves to sustainably secure the occurrence of rare animal and plant species."

Bid for NSG

For the NSG, the requirement was stipulated that the stipulated extension of the deciduous forest to the entire NSG takes place with payment of an appropriate compensation.
