Spitzer Kahlenberg nature reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Spitzer Kahlenberg nature reserve with a size of 2.5  hectares is located east of Stockum in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) with an area of 2.3 hectares for the first time in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis . When the landscape planner Sundern was reorganized, the NSG was again identified and enlarged. The NSG borders the Sundern nature reserve .

Area description

The NSG is very exposed and characterizes the landscape on the 454 m high, conical peak Kahlenberg. On the top of the mountain there is a summit cross visible from afar. On the summit there is a berry heather dominated by blueberries . The occurrence of the crowberry could no longer be detected here from 1998. The crowberry had a completely isolated location outside of its northern main range. On the steep slopes below the heather there is a mixed, structure-rich, light birch-oak coppice forest . The skeletal, almost gruesome, subsoil is extremely poor and therefore does not grow well. On the upper slope there are gnarled trees, including old oaks, birches, and sometimes even “bizarre”, multi-stemmed, old pines worthy of protection. The herbaceous layer, which is rich in grass, is mostly dominated by the wire smear , patchy blueberry, and shrub lichen in open soil locations. Some spruce trees have migrated to the north. The NSG is surrounded by a spruce forest.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest and the species there. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
