The Steinert nature reserve with a size of 26.2  hectares is located on the north-western outskirts of Allendorf in the urban area of Sundern (Sauerland) . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) with an area of 10.5 ha for the first time in 1993 with the Sundern landscape plan by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis . When the landscape planner Sundern was reorganized, the NSG was again identified and enlarged. The NSG borders directly on the village in the south. In the north, east and southeast the landscape protection area borders the outskirts and agricultural priority areas in the landscape between Amecke, Bruchhausen, Allendorf and Stockum , and in the west the landscape protection area Talraum west of Allendorf .

Area description

The Steinert is a limestone dome made of slab limestone from the Lower Carboniferous . In the forest areas and in the limestone semi-arid grassland, the limestone appears in some rock ridges. When it was placed under protection, there were mainly hay meadows and arable land in the area. In the northern part of the NSG there is a species-rich deciduous forest. The southern part is used as a pasture and hay meadow. In addition, there are small forests, field trees, hedges and a limestone semi- arid grassland in the area. The limestone semi-arid grassland is the only one in the urban area of Sundern. There were also small orchards and individual thorn bushes in the area. The forest areas were used as coppice forests.

Protection purpose

The NSG was established for the preservation of communities and habitats of certain wild plant and animal species, and also for the protection of the nationally significant biotope with high development potential. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Do's and don'ts in the NSG

In addition to the normal do's and don'ts in nature reserves in the Sundern landscape plan, the NSG Steinert provided additional information. According to the Sundern landscape plan from 1993, the limestone semi-dry lawn should be maintained through extensive sheep grazing or alternative mowing. When grazing sheep, there should be no paddock and no night pen on the limestone semi-arid grassland. Mowing should not take place before July 1st of any year. The arable land that was in the area at the time of protection should be converted into grassland. The aim was the development or restoration of lean pasture communities typical of the site. As an additional prohibition, it was stipulated that no area of more than 0.1 ha may be cleared within ten years. As an exception to the normal prohibitions in an NSG, burning was allowed on the Easter fire place within the limestone semi-dry lawn.

Protective measures

The semi-dry lime lawn and the forest around the semi-dry lime lawn were used as a goat hut by Allendorf until 1950. From the 1980s to 2013, the Association for Nature and Bird Conservation in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV) carried out maintenance work on the limestone semi- arid grassland. The semi-dry limestone lawn was mowed with the brush cutter every year. The cuttings were raked together when the VNV worked on Saturday and carried with pitchforks in two piles at the top and bottom of the area. The cuttings were then transported from the city of Sundern to a composting facility.

fauna and Flora

Male orchid in the NSG

26 land snail species were identified in the NSG. Especially in the abandoned quarries and on the grasslands are very species-rich. The western heather snail has the westernmost occurrence in the NSG in the Hochsauerland.

The occurrence of some remarkable plant species such as the male orchid ( Orchis mascula ), the great summer avens ( Orobanche elatior ), which is only found here in the western Hochsauerland district , or the grape germander ( Teucrium botrys ) should be emphasized on the poor grassland .
