The Velký Špičák ( German Großer Spitzberg , also Schmiedeberger Spitzberg ) is a 965 m high mountain in the Ore Mountains in the Aussiger region on the territory of the Czech Republic .

Location and surroundings

It is located northeast of Kovářská (Schmiedeberg) and about 5 km south of Jöhstadt in Saxony . To the west of the mountain lies the Black Water Valley . In the east is the wide valley of the Preßnitz with the Preßnitz dam , where the old mining town of Přísečnice (Preßnitz) was located until 1973 .

Paths to the summit

The road Kovářská - Preßnitz dam passes a few hundred meters south of Velký Špičák. Coming from the dam, a first path branches off after the forester's house in a left curve, then a second path on a straight stretch and a third a few hundred meters further on. This third path leads steeply uphill to the right for a few meters, then makes a right bend. After a while, a small path branches off to the left, which serpentines to the summit.

Coming from Kovářská, a well-developed forest path branches off the road in front of the summit, which leads straight to the north. After about 700 meters, another forest path branches off exactly in an easterly direction, which leads directly to the western foot of the summit. You can then climb the summit via a very steep path.

What is striking about the Spitzberg is its largely unforested basalt dome , which protrudes from a plateau and is only about 100 m wide. At the highest point there is a summit cross with several summit books. The columnar formation of the basalt is clearly visible through an open quarry.
