The German Association for Landscape Management (DVL) e. V. is a non-profit umbrella association of German landscape conservation organizations, such as landscape conservation associations , landscape conservation associations , biological stations and comparable associations in Germany. It was founded on June 4, 1993 in Berlin .

175 landscape conservation organizations work across Germany with over 10,000 farmers, 3,000 municipalities and 1,000 associations. The German Association for Landscape Management represents the interests of its members and is involved in landscape management within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (GAP) and the nature conservation programs of the federal states. In cooperation with local landscape conservation associations, the DVL organizes model projects on topics from agriculture and nature conservation , for example on Natura 2000 , renewable raw materials , the Water Framework Directive (WFD), compensation and replacement measures or regional development .

The board consists of representatives from politics, agriculture and nature conservation . This third parity is shown in the DVL logo by the three stylized trees. Chairman of the board and founding member is the former member of the Bundestag Josef Göppel . The national office of the DVL is located in Ansbach in Middle Franconia . Country offices and coordination offices support the federal office in the federal states.

goals and tasks

The association

  • represents the interests of the landscape conservation associations in Germany
  • promotes the exchange of experiences at European, federal, state and regional level
  • carries out model projects on current issues in agriculture and nature conservation - often in cooperation with local landscape conservation associations
  • supports initiatives in founding new landscape conservation associations

Structure and organization

The association is a registered and non-profit association. The close board consists of one representative each from nature conservation, agriculture and politics:

  • 1st chairman: Josef Göppel , MP a. D.
  • Deputy Chairman: Florian Meusel
  • Deputy Chair: Ute Grothey

In every federal state, country offices and coordination offices support the members there.

The DVL is a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring .

Subject areas

Agricultural and regional policy

The association works intensively on the further development of the Common European Agricultural Policy (GAP) , the nature conservation funding programs of the federal states, the European Structural Funds ( ERDF , ESF ), the joint task of "Improving the Agricultural Structure and Coastal Protection" of the Federal Government (GAK) or the EU funding program LIFE on the implementation of Natura 2000. The DVL also expresses its views on the amendment of legislative proposals, such as the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the nature conservation laws of the federal states or the Renewable Energy Sources Act .

Preservation of biological diversity

Protection and preservation of biological diversity is one of the core tasks of the landscape conservation associations . With species aid projects, species agencies and campaigns, the DVL and its members are active in protecting biodiversity . The DVL is involved in numerous projects for the protection of species and habitats, e.g. B. for the dormouse , rare field herbs or for indigenous, autochthonous seeds.

Extensive grazing

In many regions of Germany, animal husbandry and site-appropriate grazing have not only shaped landscapes, but also led to an enormous biodiversity in the cultural landscape . In nature conservation and landscape management , grazing is still the most important form of use and maintenance, in order to combine the preservation of biodiversity and landscape protection at low cost. In cooperation with European partner organizations, the DVL is developing the necessary framework conditions to anchor extensive pasture farming in the EU's common agricultural policy .

Energy and climate protection

Climate protection , agriculture and landscape conservation are closely linked, whether through the energetic use of landscape conservation materials, the testing of alternative energy crops to maize or the reduction of emissions through the careful use of organic soils. The DVL supports the generation of energy from landscape conservation material and wild plants .

Water protection

Intact waters are not only home to many plant and animal species, but also take on important ecological functions in the landscape. The DVL supports the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive .

Landscaping

The activities of the association in the field of landscape management include

  • Management of compensatory measures
  • Support for shepherds and extensive cattle farmers
  • Preservation and creation of landscape elements
  • Implementation of measures in Natura 2000 areas
  • Conservation advice in agriculture

chosen projects

100 fields for diversity

Ackerwildkäuter as cornflower , woman mirror and summer Adonisröschen were colorful companion through many centuries of food production on the fields. Increasing economic pressure on agriculture and the resulting intensification and perfection of the seed cleaning and weed control with herbicides led in recent decades to an ever-increasing loss of species in the habitat field . Today, every second wild herb species is on the red list in at least one German state . The DVL participates in the development of a nationwide network for the protection of wild herbs that are farmed in a way that is friendly to arable wild herbs.

Bavaria's original inhabitants - natural heritage needs care

The DVL is involved with the Bavarian landscape conservation associations in the species protection campaign "Bavaria's UrEinwohner" for the implementation of the Bavarian biodiversity strategy . Animals or plants that are severely endangered or particularly typical of the region are selected as “original inhabitants”. The landscape conservation associations raise awareness of the native species with imaginative campaigns in environmental education and public relations. They convey the fascination and uniqueness of the species and their habitats and the need to maintain the landscape.

MULLE

MULLE supports those interested in nature conservation, municipalities and agriculture in generating energy from landscape maintenance material. Landscape maintenance material is used wherever landscape is maintained. This includes cuttings from wet meadows , rough meadows , moors and clippings from hedges. Instead of having to dispose of the material as waste, the DVL supports its recycling in biogas plants . In the short guide “From landscape maintenance material to biogas”, published in 2012, Lutz landscape maintenance specialist and farmer Emil Energisch deal with the fermentation of the “wild greenery”.

Conservation advice for sheep-keeping companies in Thuringia

In coordination with the regional association of Thuringian Sheep Breeders, the DVL had conceived the project "Conservation advice for sheep-keeping companies in Thuringia". The aim of this project was to support selected sheep-keeping companies in Thuringia with targeted individual advice. In particular, these were sheep farms with a high proportion of nature conservation areas, where there is a great need for advice on questions of applied nature conservation. The aim of the efforts was to optimize the care and management of valuable, species-rich open land areas (e.g. orchid-rich grasslands) and thus to contribute to their preservation and to increasing the diversity of species.

German Landscape Conservation Day

Every year the association organizes an annual conference - the German Landscape Conservation Day. Current topics from politics, nature conservation, agriculture and the energy transition are addressed in specialist forums. Representatives from politics, administration, landscape conservation and agriculture, forestry and nature conservation are invited to cooperate with science and practice.

German landscape conservation award

The German Landscape Preservation Prize recognizes outstanding achievements in the preservation and development of our cultural landscapes and is awarded annually. Exemplary projects and committed people can be honored. A special award can be given to foundations or companies for their outstanding commitment.

German Landscapes Foundation

The German Landscapes Foundation was founded on July 12, 2002 by the association. It promotes the protection, maintenance and sustainable development of the natural, cultural and social diversity of German landscapes.
