Vegetative characteristics

Legousia species grow as annual herbaceous plants . The plant parts are bald or hairy. The erect or ascending stems are simple or branched.

The leaves arranged on the stem are stalked or sessile. The simple leaf blades have a smooth or notched edge.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are seldom individually, but mostly at a loose distance in spike or panicle inflorescences . There are at most short flower stalks.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals are shorter or longer than the petals, depending on the species. The calyx teeth are erect or curved. The five petals are fused into a bell-shaped to wheel-shaped corolla. The five corolla lobes are short with a more or less blunt upper end. The stamens are free. The mostly three-chamber ovary is cylindrical. The hairy style does not protrude above the corolla and usually ends in three short stigmas.

The almost cylindrical to almost prismatic, triple capsule fruits are crowned by the durable chalice. The capsule fruits usually open with two to three pores and contain many seeds. The relatively small seeds are spherical or oblong-ellipsoidal.

In Legousia TYPES is summer annual therophytes .
