The Verbandsgemeinde was founded on January 1, 2010, and the administrative community Westliche Börde was thus dissolved. Since association communities are allowed to have a maximum of eight member communities with at least 1,000 inhabitants each, the community of Wulferstedt (817 inhabitants) was incorporated into the community of Am Großen Bruch on the same day . As a result, the number of inhabitants increased from 1,581 to 2,398 (as of December 31, 2008).

coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the district on May 30, 2012.
Blazon: “In silver, a black grooved red wall with nine battlements split with a blue wave bar; Fields 1 and 4 a red sugar beet, fields 2 and 3 a red key diagonally crossed with a red hammer. "
The Verbandsgemeinde consists of four parts of the municipality, which were spatially separated by the former marshland "Großer Bruch". On one side are the municipality of Am Großen Bruch and Ausleben and on the other side the cities of Gröningen and Kroppenstedt. This spatial separation is represented by the blue wavy band in the form of the “Big Break”, which also splits the shield into two parts and at the same time stands for the part of the municipality of the same name.
The wall above with its battlements divides these two fields into two more, which results in one field for each of the four member communities. But it is also placed as a connecting element across the wavy ribbon and thus symbolizes the community of Westliche Börde as an administrative unit of the partner communities. In addition to its symbolic value of strength, unity and existence, the wall also stands as a city wall symbolically for the two cities of Grönigen and Kroppenstedt as member communities.
The color scheme of the resulting shield fields in red and silver or red and white was deliberately chosen to be that of the historical diocese of Halberstadt, to which all the communities of the union community belonged. The contrasting coloring of the shield fields and their contents is due to the heraldic principle of contrast and simplicity.
Of the shield figures in the fields created by the division, the first and fourth fields symbolize the agricultural areas and the second and third fields the more urban, artisanal parts of the community or population.
The silver or white stylized sugar beet is the most characteristic agricultural product of the region. On the one hand it shows the special soil quality of the region, which with its one hundred points represents the best standard land value in Germany, on the other hand it is the product that the region in the time of industrialization with all its effects, which also exists in the Verbandsgemeinde Westliche Börde ( Lignite opencast mining, mechanical engineering industry and sugar production), has decisively shaped it - making it the symbol of the region par excellence.
On the other hand, the hammer that crosses with the key represents the part of the population that is characterized by the many smaller craft businesses. It is a tool that is used in almost all of these businesses. The key is to be seen both as a symbol for a product of the handicraft, as well as the iconography of the seat of the association, the city of Gröningen, in the typical form of the city key.
The coat of arms was designed by the Halle historian and heraldist Marc-Robert Wistuba.
flag
The flag was approved by the county on September 18, 2012.
The flag is red and white (1: 1) striped (cross shape: stripes running horizontally, lengthways shape: stripes running vertically) and centered with the municipal coat of arms.
traffic
The federal highways 81 , 245 and 246 run through the community area .
