Forgotten disasters
Forgotten Catastrophes was a ten-part documentary series that was produced by various TV production companies between 1998 and 2003 on behalf of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) and edited by Martin Huebner , and was first broadcast on MDR television .
content
The concept of the series was to document serious accidents or major disasters. The series was limited to incidents that occurred on the territory of the GDR during the GDR era , but for which the background and causes were mostly not made public for a wide variety of reasons. Interviews with contemporary witnesses as well as image and film documents were used as dramaturgical means, and the original locations were also visited.
Shortly before the start of the third season, the then TV program director for culture and science at MDR FERNSEHENS, Helfried Spitra , described the concept in an interview as follows: “We are documenting major accidents in the past - not as a lurid sensational story, rather as an exciting piece of contemporary history. Our viewers honor that ” . The MDR editor responsible for the series, Martin Huebner, added: "With the reconstruction of the respective case, the social background and framework conditions of society should be highlighted, more precisely, the GDR society."
resonance
The series was very well received by the public and developed into one of the most successful productions of the MDR. In 1998 and 1999 (broadcast period of seasons 1 and 2) up to 320,000 viewers in Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia followed the broadcasts, which corresponded to a market share of 14.9 percent. Even outside of the MDR broadcasting area, individual episodes were followed by almost 700,000 viewers nationwide. Even with the start of the third season, the audience remained loyal to the series. When episode 7 Todesweiche 262 - Leipzig 1960 was first broadcast on November 13, 2000 at 10:30 p.m., around 330,000 viewers in the MDR broadcasting area followed the broadcast, which corresponds to a market share of 15.7 percent. Nationwide even 550,000 spectators were reached. Helfried Spitra expressed his gratitude in this regard in another interview: “We have known since the first season that our concept is right. But the fact that we have received so much support exceeds our wildest expectations. With 'Todesweiche 262' we have achieved the highest market share to date - we consciously do not rely on the sensational story, but on careful research and careful reconstruction. Apparently we are giving back some of your memories to an entire generation. That pulls the audience under its spell. "

“The course of the accident, which was based on a chain of unfavorable conditions (poor visibility) and human error by the crew, is reconstructed. The presentation focuses on how the GDR authorities dealt with the catastrophe, especially with the human dimension of the tragedy against the background of gradually normalizing relations between the two German states. Railway accident in Leipzig , in which on May 15, 1960, the Leipzig-Halle passenger train collided head-on with the Halberstadt-Schandau express train at Leipzig Central Station. At least 54 people were killed and many more were injured.
“The authors Lutz Pensionner and Frank Otto Sperlich go into the causes, backgrounds and consequences of the disaster of 1960 again. The result is exciting, not least because the authors managed to speak in great detail with those who were there at the time: Reichsbahner, survivors, relatives, rescuers, helpers and those responsible, who are still very closely involved in the events and also today Remember aftermath. The author Lutz Rentner: 'Talking about the train disaster and coming to terms with it was a real liberation for the victims and witnesses from back then. Even 30 years later, the shock about the events still rests very deeply on those affected. '" |

“In his film, MDR author Dieter Fuchs follows a story that he personally experienced at the time. At the time, he was 14 years old and one of the holiday children who were on the accident tank. He managed to win over many of the contemporary witnesses - children, carers, rescuers, relatives - for talks and interviews. The result is a sober inventory that traces the background and causes of the catastrophe and again brings remarkable insights into GDR society to light. " |
