Vernet-la-Varenne is a commune Déléguée in the French commune of Le Vernet-Chaméane with 646 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (before 2016 Auvergne ).

The municipality of Vernet-la-Varenne merged with Chaméane on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Le Vernet-Chaméane. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. The municipality of Vernet-la-Varenne belonged to the Arrondissement Issoire and the canton Brassac-les-Mines (until 2015: Canton Sauxillanges ).

Vernet-la-Varenne is about 60 kilometers south-southeast of Clermont-Ferrand . The municipality of Vernet-la-Varenne was surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Chaméane in the north, Saint-Genès-la-Tourette in the north and northeast, Saint-Germain-l'Herm in the east and southeast, Sainte-Catherine in the south, Champagnat-le- Jeune in the south and south-west, La Chapelle-sur-Usson in the south-west, Bansat in the west and Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson in the north-west.
