The Wertatscha (also Vertatscha , Slovenian : Vrtača ) is a 2180  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Karawanken on the border between Austria and Slovenia . In the old German-speaking alpine literature it is also referred to as the German mountain (Slovenian Nemška gora ) or Zinnenwand . Other names are Meniška gora ( Mönchsberg ) and Rtača .

Location and surroundings

The Wertatscha lies in the main ridge of the Karawanken, which marks the border between Austria ( Ferlach municipality ) and Slovenia ( Žirovnica municipality ). To the north, the mountain falls with steep rock walls up to 600 meters high to the Bodental above Windisch Bleiberg , the south side is flatter. In the west, the Wertascha massif is bounded by the 1840  m high Bielschitzasattel , below which lies the Klagenfurter Hütte, an important base for climbing the mountain. To the northeast, the ridge continues over the Pautzscharte ( 1950  m ) to Pautz (Slovenian Zelenjak , 2024 m) and to the 2025  m high Selenitza . To the east, the Wertascha falls with a rock face to Kar Suho ruševje . To the south-east lies the Dom na Zelenici mountain hut on the 1536  m high Selenitzasattel , another important base.

Paths to the summit

From the Bielschitzasattel, climbing tracks lead in about two hours over the rugged south-west slopes to the summit. The somewhat longer ascent from the Selenitzasattel over the southern slopes is partially marked. A gorge from the northeast from the Suho-ruševje-Kar level II , the southeast ridge (also II) and the brittle west ridge from the Bielschitzasattel (III) are already significantly more difficult.

The north face of the Wertascha is of particular alpine importance. In 1902 Eduard Pichl succeeded in the first ascent of this wall in grade IV. Today there are numerous other routes there , many of them in IV and V degrees. The first ascent of the north-west pillar by Kurt Maix in 1925 was historically significant. It was here that the fifth grade was reached for the first time in the Karawanken. The east face offers several other short climbing routes that were opened up at the end of the 20th century.

Incidents

Since Wednesday, September 21, 2016 rock falls have occurred in the Vertatscha-Kar. The cloud of dust reached up to the Klagenfurt Hut, and hiking trails were blocked as a precaution.
