The Verticordia , rarely called feather-flower bushes , are a genus of plants in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The approximately 101 species occur only in the Australian states of Western Australia and Northern Territory .

Description and ecology

Verticordia species are evergreen shrubs or rarely trees that reach heights of 1 to rarely 7 m. All parts of the plant contain essential oils . The opposite and rarely whirling arranged leaves on the branch are simple, can be tiny to medium-sized and have a smooth leaf margin. There are no stipules.

The flowers stand together individually or in small numbers in differently structured inflorescences . The hermaphrodite and five-fold flowers are radial symmetry to strongly zygomorphic . There are 20 stamens , of which mostly ten, rarely five, are fertile. Two carpels have become an under constant ovary fused with a stylus and a scar. The pollination is done by insects ( Entomophilie ) or birds ( ornithophily ).

They form dry single-chambered fruits usually contain only one, rarely two seeds.

Systematics and distribution

Subgenus chrysocoma section chrysocoma : inflorescence of Verticordia acerosa
Subgenus Verticordia Section Verticordia : Verticordia plumosa

Subgenus Verticordia Section Intricata : Verticordia mitchelliana

The botanical genus name is derived from the Latin Verticordia :

“Nickname of Venus , the ruler of hearts; A temple was built for her when three vestals fell at the same time, so that she might turn the hearts of women from unchastity. In order to consecrate this temple and to set up the image of the goddess, ten of the recognized most chaste women were chosen by Loos, who then appointed one from among them, namely Sulpicia, wife of Fulvius Flaccus. "

The distribution area of the genus Verticordia is in northern, eastern and southwestern Australia . Verticordia species are only found in the Australian states of Western Australia (only one species not) and Northern Territory (only three species). They thrive in the Mediterranean climate.

After the revision of the genus Verticordia in 1991 by AS George, it is divided into three sub-genera with 24 sections and contains around 101 species:

Subgenus Eperephes section Pennuligera : Verticordia grandis
Subgenus Eperephes Section Pennuligera : Verticordia venusta
