The Ulmer Volkshochschule (vh Ulm) is one of the ten largest adult education centers in Baden-Württemberg and is the largest adult education center in the vhs Danube / Iller region. It is the only adult education center with a cross-state educational and cultural program in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria - for Ulm , Neu-Ulm and the following cities and communities in the Alb-Donau district : Ballendorf , Beimerstetten , Bernstadt , Blaustein , Erbach , Hüttisheim , Illerkirchberg , Langenau , Neenstetten , Öllingen and Staig .

Every year around 20,000 people take part in the courses and seminars at the Ulm Adult Education Center. In addition, the same number of participants attend the extensive lecture and cultural program of the vh. The offer includes more than 3000 events with around 55,000 teaching hours per year.

With regular semester focuses, the Ulm Adult Education Center deliberately deepens certain subject complexes across departments in educational and cultural events.

history

Post-war period and a new beginning

The vh Ulm stands for a living piece of Ulm's cultural history. It was founded by Inge Scholl (later: Inge Aicher-Scholl ) and other committed Ulmers on April 24, 1946 - exactly one year after the Americans liberated Ulm - in the Martin Luther Church . Inge Scholl was the big sister of Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl , who were executed by the National Socialists in February 1943 as members of the White Rose because of their resistance to the Nazi regime .

Inge Scholl became the first director of the Ulm Adult Education Center. For them, the political and moral legacy of the White Rose became an educational mandate. Education should therefore be “in the spirit of the murdered”. Her future husband Otl Aicher and a board of trustees actively supported her in achieving this ambitious goal and high standards .

The owl of wisdom was chosen as a symbol for the educational commitment. The intellectual new beginning in Ulm should not take place solely through lectures, but rather people were actively encouraged to participate. This is how the motto "Interference desired" was born. Like no other adult education center in Germany, the vh relied from the start on the commitment of the participants to help shape the political, societal, cultural and social life of their city.

“Don't be afraid of education” was the motto at the time. They wanted to offer humanistic education, create democratic foundations for a new beginning and thus build a new society. At that time the vh was the spiritual center of Ulm. As early as 1948, 3,000 members were registered.

1950s

Even in the conservative 1950s, the vh continued on its committed and critical-constructive path, when many people in Germany shied away from a critical discussion. In 1953, among others, Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher and Max Bill founded the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG), which existed until 1968. It is still considered to be one of the most important international design colleges after the Bauhaus .

1960s and 1970s

Again and again the vh actively took up social development in order to motivate people to participate and help shape it. The 68ers met in the EinsteinHaus of the vh and during the 1970s the EinsteinHaus served as a meeting place for young people on the so-called Open Saturdays. In addition, in the 1970s and 1980s vh Ulm greatly expanded its offering - especially in the language sector and vocational training.

1980s

The 1980s were shaped by the peace movement. In addition, the Latin America movement began in Ulm at the vh. Last but not least, the Ulm Adult Education Center later became the focus of public debates on traffic and urban planning. A new concept for regional educational and cultural work in the Alb-Danube district was also developed.

Important milestones for the vh institution were the founding of the women's academy as a model project in 1986 and the founding of the Kontiki cultural workshop, which began its work in 1987 as the youth art school of the Ulm Adult Education Center.

1990s

New technologies found their way into the Einsteinhaus: computers, internet, new media, projectors, etc. A new building that could be connected to the EinsteinHaus created more space with new seminar rooms. The permanent exhibition “We wanted the other” at the White Rose Memorial in Ulm was also prepared.

The vh Ulm in the new millennium

In the spring of 2000, the permanent exhibition “We wanted the other” at the White Rose Memorial in Ulm was opened in the spacious foyer on the ground floor of the EinsteinHaus. A short time later - in autumn 2000 - the Health Academy and soon after the Yoga Center of the Health Academy were founded. A few years later, the Academy for Civic Engagement and Community Work was launched and the vh participated in numerous educational projects of the European Union. In this context, people from the Ulm / Neu-Ulm region worked with citizens of other EU countries on further training projects. They got to know each other as learners and understand each other better.

During the past 60 years, the Ulm Adult Education Center has provided important impulses for Ulm's cultural life. Today the vh has lost its special position of the 1950s and 1960s. Today it is an important part of a broad network of cultural and educational institutions in the Ulm / Neu-Ulm region.

The EinsteinHaus on Kornhausplatz in the center of Ulm is the headquarters of vh Ulm. It was built in 1968 in the style of Ulm functionalism and has 27 seminar, lecture and training rooms that are used for seminars, lecture and cultural events as well as conferences and meetings, many of which are equipped with the latest multimedia technology.

The spacious foyers with seating, which promote communication between the participants before and after the events, are remarkable. In addition, they offer plenty of space for exhibitions, work groups, parties or presentations. The communicative character is also underlined by the Alberts Café on the ground floor. vh dance studio

In the eastern part of the city - on the outskirts of Ulm city center - the vh dance studio is located in Frauenstrasse with two large gymnastics and dance rooms, changing rooms and showers.

Helferhaus in Langenau

Outside of Ulm, the Ulm Adult Education Center has two seminar rooms and a gym and exercise room on the first floor of the Langenauer Helferhaus.

The Helferhaus is a place for encounter, education and advice. It is owned by the Evangelical Church in Langenau , which carries out a substantial part of its community and youth work here and also maintains a psychological counseling center there.

Due to the spatial proximity there is a close cooperation between the Evangelical Church in Langenau and the vh Ulm. B. in the "Helferhaus-Galerie" shows: Here outstanding artists from all over Germany are invited to present their works in the premises of the church and vh Ulm. This has meanwhile become a fixture in Langenau's cultural life.
