Vincenc Prasek (also: Vinzenz Prasek ; born April 9, 1843 in Milostovice ; † December 31, 1912 in Napajedla ) was a Czech local historian, linguist, historian and journalist.

Life

Prasek's father, who died early, came from the Prussian part of Silesia, his mother from the Troppauer Land ( Opavsko ). In 1873 Vinzenz Prasek married Kateřina Opluštilová in Olomouc , with whom he had four sons and a daughter.

After attending primary school in Milostovice, Prasek was a student at the German Gymnasium in Opava until 1863. He then studied Classical Philology at the University of Vienna until 1867 with Franz Miklośic and Alois Vojtěch Šembera and from 1867 to 1868 at the University of Wroclaw . In 1868 he received his doctorate in Vienna.

He began his school career in 1868 as an intern at the German high school in Troppau and at the Czech high schools in Olomouc, Tábor and Chrudim . From 1871 he worked as a teacher at the Olomouc Slavic high school and in 1883 became director of the Czech high school in Opava. In 1895 he switched to the Slavic grammar school in Olomouc as director. After his retirement he moved to Napajedla in 1905.

In addition to his pedagogical work, Prasek was also scientifically active and wrote numerous local history books and articles from 1863 to 1912, mainly dealing with the history of Moravia and the part of Silesia that remained with Austria after the Silesian Wars and until the founding of the Czechoslovakia was designated as Austrian Silesia in 1918 . He was also involved in founding several magazines.

For his local history research he was made an honorary citizen of Tovačov , Mariánské Hory and Polská Ostrava. Pope Leo XIII. appointed him a knight of the Order of Gregory . In 1910 he was appointed curator of the Moravian Museum in Brno.
