Vincenz von Kern (born January 20, 1760 in Graz , † April 16, 1829 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor and surgeon.

Kern was born the son of a private civil servant and after graduating from high school, he prepared for a medical degree with a surgeon in Graz. However, Kern did not stay long in Graz and worked as a surgical assistant in Salzburg , Trieste and Venice . In 1783 he moved to the hospital in Sankt Marx , where he practiced and attended surgical lectures at the same time. After core had become in 1784 a Master of surgery and obstetrics, he received his doctorate in 1790 for Dr. chir. and in 1797 took over a professorship for surgery and obstetrics at the kk Lyceeum in Laibach . In addition to his eight years at the Lyceeum, he introduced vaccinations against smallpox in the Krain . After Kern also joined Dr. med. He traveled to Venice in 1803 and was introduced to the stone carving method . In 1805 Kern took over the chair of practical surgery at the University of Vienna , in 1824 he switched to the chair of theoretical surgery. The special accomplishments of Kerns include the establishment of the surgical reading society and the surgeon institute. Kern laid the foundation for a book collection that had already contained thousands of books by the time of his death, which supported doctors with scientific training, education and work. The surgeon institute that he initiated, on the other hand, laid the foundation stone for the Vienna School of Surgery. It awarded scholarships and trained a large number of surgeons in two-year specialty courses who subsequently worked in all parts of the monarchy. In the scientific field, Kern was considered a pioneer for open wound treatment and was one of the last great stone cutters. His main work “The stone complaints of the urinary bladder, its related evils and the bladder incision in both sexes” was already out of date at the time of publication, but his progressive work “Avis aux chirurgiens” was misunderstood.
