Virgilio Sabel (born October 10, 1920 in Turin , † July 7, 1989 in Rome ) was an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

After graduating from high school, Sabel moved to Roma , where he worked as a journalist and started in the film business. At the beginning of the 1940s he worked as an assistant director and, from 1948 onwards, shot a few short documentaries with Leonardo Sinisgalli , including the Una lezione di geometria and the Un millesimo di millimetro, which were photographed by Mario Bava . With these films he made a name for himself as an established, accomplished technician with clear structures and directing style.

In 1950 Sabel wrote the screenplay for Vendetta, Brother's Revenge ; two years later he was employed as assistant director to Luciano Emmers for Le ragazze di Piazza di Spagna , which was a hit with the public. He made his directorial debut in 1954 with the feature film Il figlio dell'uomo , which he wrote in Peschici and Rodi Garganico , an experimental, anti-conformist and non-commercial religious work on the life of Jesus. In 1958 Sabel was the scriptwriter for one of the first Italian science fiction films, Paolo Heusch's La morte viene dallo spazio .

In 1963 and the following year he made two reports; the first, In Italia si chiama amore , was an investigation into love and is one of the first films to document the subject of sexuality in the post-war period and in Italy. Pasquale Festa Campanile and Gian Domenico Giagni are among the workforce . The second film, Dark Skin and Light Nights , depicts Mondo-style sexual customs in Italy and Polynesia , portrayed as the Last Paradise.

For television, Sabel directed several episodes of the long-running Carosello series (a mixture of advertising, scenes and music), including Dentifricio Chlorodont - La bocca della verità with Virna Lisi and Raimondo Vianello . In addition, he wrote lyrics like Meravigliosa labbra (Music: Teo Usuelli sung by Johnny Dorelli ), which caused a stir due to its open language and La canzone del faro , the theme music of the RAI telecast Viaggio nel Sud , which he also directed. Sabel also received other commissions for television. For example, for the Sapere (“Knowledge”) section, the reports Questa nostra Italia (1968) and L'Italia dei dialetti (1969).

As a result of his documentaries, Sabel discovered the beauty of Calabria for himself, where he bought a house in Ricadi , which he used as a summer residence and where he later moved to.

The director committed suicide in July 1989 and was buried in the San Nicolò di Ricadi cemetery. His constituency uses his financial legacy for recreational projects with children.
