Band history

The band became known through a demo CD that was received by the Berlin youth radio station Fritz and played there. Subsequently, the EP Mein Sein was released on the label Blickpunkt Pop , which achieved a high level of awareness in the indie pop scene. Director Benjamin Quabeck shot the first music video for them and from then on did this for all of the band's other singles. Virginia Now! quickly found numerous fans on their tours.

The first album Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Jetzt! Was released on the Motor label (Universal) in 2003 . (based on the play Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee ) and two single releases. The more pop- oriented album Beginners followed in 2004 and reached number 17 in the German album charts. As the most successful single to date, Ein Ganzer Sommer reached number 28.

After a discussion about possible accusations of nationalism - triggered by the band Mia. - upset the entire German music scene in September 2003 , Virginia Jetzt! Affected by these allegations, because the band had friendly contacts with Mia. and the bands had also made music together. The trigger for these allegations was the line of text This is my country, my people from the play Liebeslieder , which was published on the album Beginners . However, the band vehemently denied the allegations, including pointing out that the quote was used completely out of context, which in turn is a quote from Randy Newman's My Country .

In 2005, Virginia took now! took part in Stefan Raab's Bundesvision Song Contest for her homeland Brandenburg and achieved eighth place with the title True Love .

On January 27, 2007 the album was released under Land . In March 2007 the "Land Unter Tour" followed through all of Germany - some concerts took place in Austria. The album Blooming Landscapes was released in late August 2009. It was created in collaboration with Stefan Zauner from Münchener Freiheit , who was a guest singer and arranger. On May 24, 2010, the band announced their breakup. In October of the same year, she went on a farewell tour with well-known companions such as Juli , Fettes Brot , Klee and Madsen . In parallel, the band converted their official website into a souvenir album.

Naming

The name of the band goes back to an anecdote according to which the pianist Thomas Dörschel met a girl named Virginia shortly after the band was founded and invited her to a performance by the young band at the Immergut Festival . So that they don't get lost on the way to the performance, there are signs with the words Virginia Now turn! and direction arrows were painted and hung in Neustrelitz . The girl was ultimately not interested in the performance. In an interview in 2003, Mathias Hielscher stated that this story was "extremely made up".

Music genre

Characteristic of the Virginia Now! are the harmonious and partly choral pop pieces that revolve around basic themes such as love, longing, youth and music.

The voice of the singer Nino Skrotzki, which is sometimes supported by piano or keyboard sounds by the songwriter Thomas Dörschel, is characteristic of the band's pieces. In the second album, which is generally more pop-heavy, you can clearly hear the influence of the American songwriter Ben Folds, whom Dörschel greatly appreciates .
