Life

Origin and family

Vivean Gray was born to Allan Gray and Doris Gray. Her parents had in 1923 in the district of Simpson in Buckinghamshire married. She was the oldest of four children. She attended Thrunscoe Girls' School. In the 1930s the family moved to Kingston upon Thames in South West London . In 1941 the family was evacuated back to Cleethorpes because of World War II . In 1945 the family settled in New Malden, Surrey , where Gray's father got a job as a fishmonger at Grimsby Docks and ran a fish and chip shop.

Gray initially worked as a local reporter , photo assistant and saleswoman in a department store . She later became a nurse and worked in the Women's Land Army during World War II . In 1952 (according to other sources: 1953) she emigrated to Australia in order to begin a career as an actress, as the employment opportunities as an actress in Great Britain seemed too limited for her. In Australia she got roles on stage and radio, and later she also worked for cinema and television.

Career

During the 1970s and 1980s, Gray starred in a number of television films and series made by Crawford Productions , including a. in Homicide (1969-1974), Division 4 (1970-1975), Matlock Police (1972; 1976), Der Landpolizist (1976), Bluey (1976) and Carson's Law (1983).

She had her best-known film role as math teacher Miss McGraw, who mysteriously disappears with some students on a trip to Hanging Rock , in Peter Weir's feature film Picnic on Valentine's Day (1975). With Peter Weir worked again on the film The Last Flood (1977), with Richard Chamberlain in the lead role. She played the role of scientist Dr. Whitburn, an expert on Aboriginal culture .

As a television actress, she was best known for two long-standing series roles: as Ida Jessup in the Australian soap The Sullivans (1976-1983) and as Nell Mangle in the soap opera Neighbors (1986-1988). Both roles were similar as gossipy neighbors. As Ida Jessup, she played the neighbor of the Sullivans, a Melbourne family from the Australian middle class, who came from Battersea , England . For her role as Ida Jessup she won two Logie Awards : 1978 in the category: "Best Sustained Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role" and 1981 in the category: "Best Support Actress in a Series".

In 1986, Gray was cast as Nell Mangle, known as Mrs. Mangle, in the soap opera Neighbors . Their appearances were initially only planned for a period of three weeks. However, her character proved so successful that her role was seen on the series until 1988. Gray played the Nell Mangle in a total of 292 episodes. Although she only appeared in the series for two years, Gray's character Nell Mangel was one of the "icons" and the biggest "bad guys" of the series. Nell Mangel was known for her ongoing feud with her neighbor, series character Madge Bishop, played by Anne Charleston , and her contest for the feelings of tenant Harold Bishop (played by Ian Smith ). Gray left the series due to sometimes violent reactions from their fans, who could not separate the fictional character of Nell Deficiency from the person of Vivean Gray. She left the series when the character Nell Mangel moved to St Albans in Hertfordshire , where she lived a happy retirement with a retired dentist.

She was also seen in a recurring series role as a posh poisoner in the Australian prison series Prisoner (1984).

Late years

After her departure from the series Neighbors , Gray withdrew completely from the public. The role of Nell Lack remained her last role. She then gave up acting completely. She returned to her native UK in the mid-1990s. She moved to Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex, where she led a quiet and private life from then on. She strictly declined interview requests and did not answer any fan mail or autograph requests. In 1995, an Australian postage stamp was issued showing Gray in her role in Valentine's Day Picnic .

Gray died in her hometown in July 2016 at the age of 92.
