Vladimír Weiss (born November 30, 1989 in Bratislava ) is a Slovak football player who has been under contract with ŠK Slovan Bratislava since February 2020 .

Club career

Weiss started playing football at Inter Bratislava . In 2006 the then 16-year-old midfielder was signed by Manchester City . With their youth team he won the FA Youth Cup in the 2007/08 season . He scored a goal in the second leg and was part of the win. In the Premier League Weiss made his debut on May 24, 2009. On the last day of the 2008/09 season , he came in the 70th minute of the game for Stephen Ireland in his team's 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers . He was not used in the Premier League in 2009, but he played twice in the League Cup. On December 2, 2009, he scored his first goal as a professional against Arsenal .

In January 2010 Weiss was loaned to Bolton Wanderers and came to his first game a day later. In August 2010 Weiss was loaned to the Glasgow Rangers for one season . He was Scottish Champion with the Rangers in 2011. For the 2011/12 season he was loaned to Spain to Espanyol Barcelona .

For the 2012/13 season , Weiss moved to the Italian first division club Delfino Pescara in 1936 . He signed a one-year contract with the promoted team until June 30, 2013 with an option for further seasons.

Already after only one year Weiss left the Italian club to the Serie B relegation. He moved to the Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus and signed a three-year contract.

During the winter break of the 2013/14 season, he surprisingly moved to the Lekhwiya Sports Club in Qatar. Weiss signed a four and a half year contract that should bring him two million euros annually.

In February 2016, Weiss moved to Al Gharafa .

National team

Weiss made his debut in the Slovak national team on August 12, 2009 in a 1-1 draw in Reykjavík against Iceland . He was also part of the Slovak squad for the 2010 World Cup , where he played three games. He was named player of the game in the first game against New Zealand .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Slovak squad. He was on the starting line-up in all four games in the tournament. In the second game against Russia he scored the 1-0 lead and prepared the 2-0. Against Germany he only played the first half in the round of 16, then he was replaced when the score was 2-0. The team lost 3-0 and was eliminated.

Others

Weiss' father of the same name is a former soccer player and former coach of the Slovak and currently the Georgian national team. His grandfather of the same name is also a former soccer player, he played three times for the Czechoslovak national team .
