Call for founding from 1872

The Club Vosgien (since 1995 officially Fédération du Club Vosgien , German Vosges Club ) is a French hiking club with a focus on Alsace , eastern Lorraine and northeastern Franche-Comté .

Richard Stieve (1838-1919), a lawyer from Recklinghausen who was considered to be the founding father and who worked as a district judge in Zabern after the war of 1870/71 , wrote the “Appeal for the formation of a Vosges club” on October 31, 1872. This call led to the constituent assembly of the Vosges Club in Strasbourg on December 15, 1872 . The first chairman was Curt Mündel , known for his widely published guide The Vosges - travel guide for Alsace-Lorraine and the neighboring mountains . In 1879 the association was recognized as a non-profit organization. In the period around 1890–1910, the Vosges Club built the observation towers on the peaks of Scherhol , Grand Wintersberg , Wasenkoepfel , Brotschberg , Climont , Champ du Feu , Heidenkopf , Ungersberg and Faudé . When the German Hiking Association was founded in 1883, he was one of the main initiators and became its tenth member. After Alsace-Lorraine returned to France in 1919, he resigned from the latter, from 1940 to 1944 he was again a member of the Vosges Association for a short time.

The Vosges Club has 111 local groups (as of 2006) and around 34,000 members. The main office is in Strasbourg . Alain Ferstler from Montbronn has been the main chairman since 2017 .

The association's tasks include maintaining and marking the almost 19,000 km network of hiking trails. The waymarks are set up by over 760 members on a voluntary basis . The association runs 26 of its own hiking hostels and maintains 67 refuges . In addition to promoting hiking tourism, the Vosges Club is also dedicated to other nature activities such as climbing and skiing as well as nature conservation . The association publishes hiking guides and hiking maps , and the third annual Les Vosges is published as a communication organ .

The Vosges Club is a member of the Fédération française de la randonnée pédestre .
