Volkmar Muthesius
Karl Volkmar Muthesius (born March 19, 1900 in Weimar ; † July 12, 1979 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German business journalist in the classically liberal tradition.
His journalistic focus included promoting the market economy and correcting common errors, as well as the topics of money and inflation. Many of his books have been published by Fritz Knapp Verlag, of which Muthesius became co-owner.
Life
The son of a teacher and nephew of the architect Hermann Muthesius attended the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar, studied a. a. in Jena law and did his doctorate with Justus W. Hedemann on the subject of the legal nature of the forced loan from 1922 . At the Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung he learned the tools of the business journalist. From there he switched to the German economist in 1929 , and after only a few months switched to the Berliner Tageblatt as a business correspondent in Düsseldorf.
Muthesius was head of the business editorial department of the Berliner Tageblatt and the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . Later he was the editor of the monthly papers for free economic policy .
In 1948 he founded the magazine for the entire credit system together with the publishers Fritz Knapp and Walter Hoffmann and acted as its editor.
Muthesius was chosen - by Wilhelm Röpke and Alexander Rustow - to head the Walter Eucken Institute . Muthesius declined to pursue an academic career, however, because he saw his task in business journalism, which could reach a large audience, and because , as a classical liberal, he was critical of ordoliberalism , especially the state cartel supervision - as his memoirs show.
From 1961 to 1971 he was President of the Taxpayers Association .
