The first branch was opened in November 1956 in Hemsbach.

In 1958 the second branch was Birkenau, at that time the “pay office” in Hauptstrasse. 75 opened.

In line with the car boom of the 1960s, Volksbank expanded the parking lot at the main office and opened an outdoor car counter here in 1968.

In March 1987 the bank's first ATM was installed in the Mult branch. Today Volksbank Weinheim eG has 15 ATMs in its business area.

Historic building Villa Hagander

The two-storey Villa Hagander was built in 1851. In 1988, Volksbank Weinheim eG bought this historic property, which to this day houses private banking support and the Volksbank Weinheim Foundation.

In 2013, the foundation, in cooperation with the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW), awarded the “Future of the World of Work” science prize for the first time. The third award ceremony took place in June 2016.

history

Founding years and upswing

The origins of Volksbank Weinheim eG go back to June 1866, when 95 signatures from local businesses and local agriculture signaled the willingness to set up an advance payment and credit association. The actual establishment took place on June 12, 1866 with 124 members. With the issue of 300 shares of 10 guilders each, the first operating resources were procured. The shares had an interest rate of 4% and were taken over by 42 founding members. The membership fee was initially 30 kreuzers (later 1 gulden) and shares in the amount of 50 gulden, which could also be paid in installments of 20 kreuzers each. Loans were set at a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 300 guilders for members, savings were also possible by non-members. The first seat of the cooperative was the Janzer house on Weinheim market square. Under the management of notary Grether, R. Gericke and Carl Janzer. The business of the cooperative was initially run on a voluntary basis.

In 1873 an administrative position was occupied for the first time by a professional civil servant. At the same time, the office was relocated to the municipal school building in Obergasse. As a result of changes to the cooperative law in the same year, the name was also changed to "Weinheimer advance association registered cooperative" and a business relationship with the German cooperative bank was established. In 1875 the currency was changed to marks .

On December 30, 1889, the entry was made in the cooperative register and two years later, in 1891, 1,000 members were recorded, who were involved with parts of the business worth a total of 320,000 marks. The annual turnover amounted to around 5 million marks. In 1896 the number of the supervisory board was increased from six to eight members and in 1899 the check was introduced for the first time.

The new century

On December 1, 1900, the cooperative moved to a new bank building on Ehretstrasse. In 1903, the cashier Philipp Zinkgräf held the main office as director of the cooperative for the first time, and in 1906 the cooperative was converted from one with unlimited to one with limited liability. The name was changed to "Vereinsbank Weinheim eGmbH". The number of members this year was 1,600 with shares of around 600,000 marks. In 1910 the bank expanded the main building and enlarged its rooms. By 1914, the number of members exceeded the 2,000 mark. The turnover was around 117 million marks and rose to around 350 million marks by 1919.

Weimar Republic until the turn of the millennium

During the great inflation, the paper mark balance peaked in 1923 and stood at 51,946,341,283,076,651.75 marks. In 1928 the bank recorded an initial high of 2,825 members. In 1941 the cooperative still had 1,289 members, the annual balance was 3,632,822 Reichsmarks, the turnover was 32,845,700 Reichsmarks. In the same year, the General Assembly decided to change the name to “Volksbank Weinheim”.

After the effects of the Second World War , the conversion to the Deutsche Mark in 1948 marked a new beginning. In 1951 the balance sheet total was 1.5 million DM, in 1956 4.3 million DM and 1959 10.4 million DM.

In 1956 the first branch opened in Hemsbach, two years later another in Birkenau. In 1960 the main office moved into its current bank building on Bahnhofstrasse at the corner of Bismarckstrasse. Further branches followed: 1961 in Weinheimer Weststadt, 1962 in Mörlenbach and 1963 in Wald-Michelbach, 1968 in Leutershausen (today: part of the municipality of Hirschberg an der Bergstrasse ), 1971 in Weinheimer Nordstadt. In December 1967, the Volksbank Weinheim gallery opened its first art exhibition with the artist Gerhard Mehlhase. Between 1970 and 1980 the bank also had a travel agency, which in 1980 had its own shop in the main office. In 1982 the bank opened a branch in the Weinheimer Mult-Zentrum, it was one of the first bank branches in a shopping center in the region. In 1989 the bank entered the real estate brokerage business with the development of real estate services.

By the end of 1991, all branches were equipped with an ATM and a bank statement printer. In December 1992, Asset Management moved into its new domicile in the Villa Hagander. For the move, the historic building was completely renovated and brought up to date with the latest technology. Further construction work began in December 1994, connecting the Villa Hagander to the bank's main office with an extension building. The new building offered space for meetings and training courses on the ground floor, while the bank's corporate customer service moved to the first floor.

In 1996 the first direct bank program for the Internet and personal telephone service was launched.

From the year 2000 until today

After 33 years, the gallery in the Volksbank Weinheim celebrated its 500th art exhibition on September 19, 2000, in which regional, national and international artists were now represented. In October 2000 the branch in the Mult-Zentrum was converted into a bank shop, which reopened as the most modern bank branch in Weinheim on October 19, 2000 thanks to the extensive self-service service and extended opening hours. In 2005 the two branches in Hemsbach were closed and replaced by a modern branch in a central location on the Kurpfalzkreisel.

In 2006 the bank invested almost two million euros in the modernization of its main office, which celebrated its reopening on July 28th after a major renovation and equipping with the latest technology and security measures.

The expansion and heightening of the intermediate building to the entrepreneur's house, which was inaugurated in 2011, was also spatially accommodated for the strong growth in corporate customer business.

The bank celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2016.

At their 55th ordinary meeting of representatives on July 29, 2020, the representatives present voted for a merger with Volksbank Kurpfalz.
