The Vordere Eggenspitze ( Italian Cima Sternai Meridionale ) is a 3385  m slm high mountain in the Ilmenkamm of the Ortler Alps . It is located on the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Trentino in the Stilfserjoch National Park .

Location and surroundings

To the north of the Vorderen Eggenspitze there is a cirque , in which there are scree and isolated firn fields that once formed a large glacier . The east ridge of the Vorderen Eggenspitze and the northeast ridge of the Hinteren Eggenspitze ( Cima Sternai ) accompany the cirque until both ridges and the cirque flow into the Grünsee ( Lago Verde ), a reservoir at an altitude of 2529  m .

Another ridge runs to the northwest and south, the main ridge of the Ilmmenkamm , which connects the Vordere Eggenspitze with neighboring mountains: the Hinteren Eggenspitze in the northwest and the Gleckspitze ( Collecchio ) in the southeast. Between these ridges there are rubble and scree slopes and smaller snow fields.

Bases and development

There is no marked trail leading to the Vordere Eggenspitze, but the last part can be climbed with easy to moderately difficult climbing . The bases for the tour are the Höchst Hut ( Rif. Canziani ) approx. 2 km as the crow flies in the northeast and the Rifugio Silvio Dorigoni in the southwest.
