The Vordtriede-Haus Freiburg is located at Fichtestrasse 4 in Haslach-Gartenstadt in Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1926 to 1938 it was the former residence of the Jewish journalist Käthe Vordtriede (1891–1964) and her two children, the university professor Fränze Vordtriede (1911–1997) and the literary scholar Werner Vordtriede (1915–1985). The house was the last common residence before they emigrated as a result of persecution . As part of the DC circuit Kathe Vordtriede was membership (Membership no. 3482) in Building Association Freiburg i. Br. Terminated at the end of 1938. This also meant that her lifelong entitlement to reside expired.

Remembrance project

Since 2014, a private memorial initiative called “Vordtriede-Haus Freiburg” has been dedicated to the memory of Käthe, Fränze and Werner Vordtriede. The initiator and project manager is the current tenant of the house. The motto of the project is: "Remembrance, research, warning." On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Käthe Vordtriede's death , a press article in 2014 reported for the first time about the initiative that made the suggestion for a street name in the neighboring district. There was no political majority in favor of naming the street “Geschwister-Vordtriede-Straße”.

In 2015 the initiative published a so-called “Vordtriede Quiz ” and participated in the “Haslach Advent Calendar”. Readers were asked to support the project with documents, photos and information.

At the beginning of 2016 there was a nomination for the "HelferHerzen" award of the drugstore chain dm . In April 2016, the initiative held an eyewitness interview with Werner Vordtriede in Munich . The contemporary witness was literary scholar Dieter Borchmeyer , a former student. In June 2016, it was proposed to name a street in Munich after Werner Vordtriede. One reason was the renaming of historically burdened street names . By September 2016 there were several translations of the “Vordtriede quiz”. The initiative was registered with the BfDT in November . At the end of 2016, Bauverein Breisgau eG, as the owner of the listed residential building, presented the citizens 'project in its members' magazine.

In the spring of 2017, the house was added to the Freiburg history database Future History. At the end of May, the “Vordtriede Quiz” was taken over into the books of the Freiburg im Breisgau city library . At the beginning of July there was a city tour in cooperation with the Augustinermuseum Freiburg. In December 2017 the Bauverein Breisgau eG paid tribute to the commemorative project.

In 2018 the Vordtriede family and their last place of work became part of a school competition in Baden-Württemberg . The background was the 80th anniversary of the “ Reichspogromnacht ”. The former politician Johannes Gerster from Mainz took over the patronage .

The project has been part of the “House of Engagement” educational network in Freiburg since June 2019 . In August 2019, exactly on the 55th anniversary of Käthe Vordtriede's death, the Badische Zeitung reported for the first time about the children Fränze and Werner Vordtriede and the quiz that had already been published.

In January 2020 there was an invitation to Halle (Saale) on the 75th day of commemoration of the victims of National Socialism . A reading production was opened there. For the first time outside of Freiburg, the emigrated family and the project were also presented. At the end of March 2020, a report by Käthe Vordtriede was published in book form. This is about the Caritas Association Freiburg and was written by the journalist in 1928. In April, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , participation in the “Boulevard des Engagement” was postponed to the following year. The planned major event was part of the city anniversary “900 years of Freiburg”.

Awards

At the end of 2015, the project was awarded the city prize “ Civic Engagement ”. Associated with this was the invitation to a planned political educational trip to Berlin . Traditionally, an incumbent member of the Bundestag of the federal constituency of Freiburg has been invited . This time it was Kerstin Andreae . The prize money was used for research. In the summer of 2016, a certificate for social engagement followed in the field of political education . The organizer was the drugstore chain dm.
