The vršič pass ( və͡ɾʃiːt͡ʃ ; Italian : Passo della Moistrocca , German : Werschitz- or Werschetzpass ) ( 1611 m i J... ) Is the highest for general haulage drivable mountain pass Slovenia and establishes the connection between Kranjska Gora and the village Trenta in Soča -Tal forth . The pass forms the watershed for Soča (south course) and Sava (north course).
History and traffic
The 50 hairpin bends in the northern part of the pass road are partly cobblestone. The winter closure typically begins at the end of October and ends at the beginning of May. Specific road conditions may result in other blocking times.
The pass road was built by Russian prisoners of war in the years 1915–1916 as a military road for Austria-Hungary into the Isonzo valley (see Isonzo battles ) . Over 400 of them perished in an avalanche in March 1916 alone . On the north side at about 1200 m above sea level, the "Russian Chapel" (Ruska kapelica) built by these Russians commemorates the victims. The street was opened in the second half of 1915 and named after Prince Eugen as Erzherzog-Eugen-Straße . A large part of the supplies for the great offensive by Austria-Hungary and Germany in the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo took place via this road . Today's route only partially follows the original route; the south side has been largely redesigned.
Alpinism
The pass is the starting point for numerous mountain tours in the Julian Alps . The Alpe Adria Trail also touches the pass. The Tičarjev Dom mountain hut ( 1620 m. I. Year ) is located near the top of the pass . A footpath begins behind the hut and takes you to the Postarski Dom hut ( 1688 m. I. J. ) in 15 to 20 minutes . From there you have an impressive view of the south side of the 2547 m. i. J. high prisojnik .
