The WB Yeats is a passenger and car ferry operated by Irish Ferries .

history

The ferry was built by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) under construction number 771 . The order was placed in May 2016 by the Irish Continental Group (ICG), which operates Irish Ferries' ferry routes. Construction began on April 7, 2017. The ship was laid down on September 11, 2017. The largest passenger and car ferry ever built in Flensburg was christened on January 19, 2018 and launched with a traditional launch . Godmother was Ricki Rothwell, the daughter of the CEO of the Irish Continental Group. Then the deckhouse sections , which were built under subcontracted by a Polish shipyard, were placed on the hull with floating cranes .

The maiden voyage of the € 144 million ferry was initially planned for June and later for July 12, 2018 from Dublin . The delivery was postponed several times.

When testing the drive system on October 17, 2018, one of the diesel engines overheated and was severely damaged after an outlet valve in the engine's cooling water circuit was closed. There is a suspicion that the valve was intentionally closed. The shipyard then filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor's office in Flensburg . On October 29, 2018, the ship set sail for a test drive in the direction of Bornholm and returned to Flensburg on November 7, 2018.

The ship was delivered on December 12, 2018. She entered service on the Dublin - Holyhead route on January 22, 2019. It has been in service between Dublin and Cherbourg since March 2019.
