William Peter Stephens

(William) Peter Stephens (born March 16, 1934 in Penzance ; † April 1, 2019 ) was a British Methodist clergyman. He was President of the 1998/1999 Annual Conference of the Methodist Church of Great Britain , Chairman and General Superintendent of the Methodist Church in The Gambia, and from 2010 to 2012 its Chairman Bishop .

He was a linguist who traveled and preached in many countries and was closely involved in the Conference of European Churches and the World Council of Methodist Churches .

Life

Origin and education

Stephens was born in Penzance in 1934 and trained at Truro School , Clare College, and Wesley House , Cambridge . He was ordained in 1960 and served as a chaplain at the University of Nottingham from 1961 to 1965 . He spent two years (1965-1967) at the Universities of Strasbourg and Münster and received his doctorate in 1970 on the subject of The Holy Spirit in theology of Martin Bucer . Stephens was a tutor at Hartley Victoria College , Manchester from 1971 to 1973 (previously he was assistant tutor from 1958 to 1961), from 1973 to 1980 at Wesley College , Bristol and from 1980 to 1986 at Queen's College , Birmingham . From 1986 to 1999 he was Professor of Church History at the University of Aberdeen , where he was Dean of the Faculty of Theology from 1986 to 1988 and Provost of the Faculty from 1988 to 1989 .

From 1995 he was President of the Society for Reformation Studies and in 1997 he won the Max Geilinger Prize for The Theology of Huldrych Zwingli .

Methodist clergyman

Stephens was stationed at the Croydon Circuit from 1967 to 1971, from 1999 to 2000 he was Superintendent Minister of the Plymouth Methodist Mission Circuit, from 2000 to 2002 pastor of the Mint Methodist Church Center in Exeter and Methodist chaplain at the University of Exeter , from 2002 to 2003 superintendent Minister of the Liskeard and Looe Circuit. He was pastor at the Uckfield and Lewes, Mid-Sussex Circuit from 2004 to 2006.

Work in Gambia and chairing bishop

From 2003 to 2004 he was chairman and general superintendent of the Methodist Church in Gambia and from 2010 to 2012 he was its chairman bishop.

Peter Stephens' funeral took place on Wednesday April 17, 2019.
