The W-Arly-Pendjari National Park Complex , also WAP National Park Complex or WAP Complex , is a cross-border complex of several protected areas between the states of Benin , Burkina Faso and Niger . At the center of the complex are the W , Arly and Pendjari National Parks . The multinational national park complex, which is unique in the world, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 , after the part of the W in Niger was designated as such since 1996.

location

The national park complex is located in the south of West Africa in the north of Benin, south-east Burkina Faso and south-west Niger. The protection complex is crossed by the Niger River in the east and the Pendjari , a tributary of the Volta , in the west . Overall, the area has an area of around 31,000 km² and is therefore larger than, for example, the state of Brandenburg .

In addition to the three national parks that form the core, other protected areas belong to the WAP complex: For example the Réserve partielle de Pama , Réserve totale du Singou and Réserve partielle de la Kourtiagou in Burkina Faso.

fauna

Antelopes and warthogs cross the Pendjari River from the Pendjari National Park in Benin to the Arly National Park in Burkina Faso

The WAP complex is one of the last refuge areas for the endangered West African lion . It is believed that around 90 percent of the total West African lion population resides in the area.

Other large animals include the African elephant , leopard , hippopotamus , African buffalo , warthog , roan antelope , West African hartebeest and others. There are also cheetahs and African wild dogs .
