Wacław Teodor Iwaszkiewicz-Rudoszański , usually called Wacław Iwaszkiewicz (born August 26, 1871 in Omsk , † November 25, 1922 in Warsaw ) was a general in the Imperial Russian Army and later a division general of the armed forces of the Second Polish Republic .

Life

Iwaszkiewicz was the son of a participant exiled to Siberia in the Polish January uprising of 1863/1864. After completing his military training in Saint Petersburg , he took up service in the tsarist army in 1891. In 1892 he became an officer in the infantry . In 1900 Iwaszkiewicz took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China .

In the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 Iwaszkiewicz was used in the defense of the fortress of Port Artur . During World War I , as a colonel, he commanded the 54th Siberian Rifle Regiment, and later an infantry brigade and division. For his participation in the battle of Łódź he was promoted to major general in 1914 and was awarded the golden saber "For Bravery" of the Russian Empire. In 1915 he took part in the defense of Warsaw against the army of the German Empire . Wounded near Riga . After the outbreak of the October Revolution in 1917, he was active in the unification of Polish-born officers and soldiers of the former Tsarist Army in Russia and became a member of the Supreme Polish Military Committee founded by Władysław Raczkiewicz . From November 21, 1917 he led the 3rd Polish Rifle Division, a large infantry unit in the Association of the First Polish Corps in Russia under General Józef Dowbor-Muśnicki . In Bobrujsk he surrendered together with the entire corps on May 21, 1918 to the army of the German Kaiser .

On October 31, 1918, Iwaszkiewicz was formally an officer of the newly formed Polish Army with the rank of lieutenant general . From then on he headed the military administration in Kielce .

During the Polish-Soviet War , he commanded units in Galicia , Volhynia and Podolia under the command of General Piłsudski . During Pilsudski's offensive on Kiev , he led the 6th Army of the Polish Armed Forces. In the Battle of Warsaw he commanded the southern front against the attacking Soviet troops.
