Election to the CDU presidency 2022

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The election for the CDU party chairmanship in 2022 is made necessary by the announced resignation of the current CDU chairman Armin Laschet . For the first time, all CDU party members were surveyed about the new party chairman. The formal election will take place at the CDU federal party conference in January 2022.

background

From 2018 to 2021 there were several leadership changes at the CDU. After the CSU suffered major losses in the state elections in Bavaria in October 2018 and two weeks later the CDU also lost double digits in the state elections in Hesse , long-time CDU chairwoman Angela Merkel announced that she would no longer run for the office of party leader at the upcoming party conference to run for the presidency of the CDU. CDU General Secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer , former parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz and Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn ran to succeed her as party leader . This was the first time since 1971 that there was more than one candidate for the post, and for the first time ever there were more than two. On December 7, 2018, the delegates at the 31st federal party conference of the CDU elected Kramp-Karrenbauer as the new party leader in the second ballot.

On February 10, 2020, CDU chairwoman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announced her withdrawal from the party leadership, immediately during the government crisis in Thuringia , which was triggered by the election of the FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as prime minister with votes from the CDU and AfD . Armin Laschet , Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, once again Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen applied to succeed him . The election of the new party leader was originally scheduled for the end of April 2020, but had to be postponed twice due to the corona pandemic . On January 16, 2021, a digital party conference elected Armin Laschet as the new CDU federal chairman in the second ballot. Since this was the first digital personal election in German party history, formal confirmation by postal vote was necessary.

After strong internal party pressure because of the historically worst result of the CDU in the 2021 federal election , Laschet announced on October 7, 2021 that he wanted to give up the party leadership. He will remain in office until a successor is appointed.

Because of the recent frequent changes in the party chairmanship and the displeasure of the party base about the procedures for the recent elections for the party chairmanship and the determination of the chancellor candidate Laschet, voices were raised after a member participation to clarify the successor question. The SPD had already occupied its party chairmanship in 2019 by means of a member survey. In a conference of district chairmen convened by the party executive, a clear picture of opinions per member survey became clear. The suggestion that the party should be led by a dual leadership was not accepted by the party bodies. As a result, on November 2, 2021, the CDU federal executive board decided on the procedure for member participation to fill the future party chairmanship.

proceedings

For a candidacy, the support of one of the executives of the district, district and state associations of the CDU, the executives of the party's federal associations or the national executive of the evangelical working group of the CDU/CSU was required. Three applicants were nominated during the nomination phase from November 6th to November 17th, 2021 . They then introduced themselves to CDU members from November 18 to December 2, including in a television debate on December 1.

From December 4th to 16th, 2021, the member survey took place online and by postal vote by all CDU members. The result was announced on December 17th. If no election proposal had achieved an absolute majority, a runoff between the two best-placed candidates would have followed between December 29 and January 12, 2022.

The formal election for the party leadership will take place at the 33rd CDU federal party conference on January 21 and 22, 2022. There, the new election of the entire CDU Federal Executive Committee will also take place.
