  • The election for the Shura Council in Egypt in 2012 took place from January 29 to February 22, 2012. In the first round, 3,543,972 people voted (12%?); in the second round 2,606,126 (almost 9%?).

    It was the body's first free election. At that time Egypt had a two-chamber system with a Shura Council (Arabic " Majlis asch-Shura " ) as the upper house and the people's assembly as the lower house . The last Shura council elections took place in June 2007 and June 2010 .

    The Liberal Party of the Free Egyptians announced that it would boycott the elections for the Shura Council in protest against serious irregularities during the previous general election in 2011/12 and against the election campaign, which was heavily influenced by religious issues.

    Electoral process

    The election for the Shura Council was held in two rounds:

    • The first round on January 29th and 30th, 2012 with a runoff on February 5th and 6th;
    • The second round on February 14th and 15th with a runoff on February 21st and 22nd.

    Of a total of 270 seats on the Shura Council, 180 were filled by election and 90 were appointed by the elected president after the presidential election. The original plan was to have the Shura Council elected in three rounds (with the third round taking place on March 4-5 and the runoff elections on March 11-12), but in spring 2012 the electoral process accelerated to the transition period to shorten.
