Walden is a city and county seat of Jackson County , in northern Colorado in the United States . It is the only united (incorporated) ward in Jackson County. The city is located at an altitude of about 2,469 meters in North Park (Colorado Basin) , a very sparsely populated valley in the Rocky Mountains on the edge of the Medicine Bow Mountains , about 30 kilometers south of the Wyoming border .

history

Walden was founded in 1889 as a trading post at the junction of the wagon routes from Laramie , Wyoming to the former silver mining town, now the ghost town of Teller City near Grand Lake , Colorado and the route from Albany , Wyoming to Granby , Colorado. Walden was unified in 1890. The town was first called Sagebrush and was later renamed Walden in honor of Marcus Aurelius Walden , one of the first directors of the local post office. Before the settlement, the area around Walden belonged to the hunting ground of the Ute Indians .

Demographics

According to a 2010 survey by the United States Census Bureau, Walden has 608 people, 318 men and 290 women.

Attractions

In the city, in a building from 1882, is the North Park Pioneer Museum , a local history museum in which the history of the region since the colonization of America is presented in 27 rooms .

Jackson County Courthouse in Walden

The Jackson County Courthouse was built in 1913 as the courthouse for Jackson County , which was founded in 1909, from local sandstone. The building was included in the National Register of Historic Places in Colorado in 1990 and extensively restored to restore it to its original state.

About two kilometers west of the city is the Walden Reservoir, which is classified as an Important Bird Area in the USA. The headwaters of the North Platte River are near the city.

Established in 1970, the 286.67 km² State Forest State Park and the North Sand Hills, a dune landscape, are located east of the city.
