Waldyr Calheiros Novaes

Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais (born July 29, 1923 in Murici , † November 30, 2013 in Volta Redonda ) was Roman Catholic bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda in Brazil .

Life

Waldyr Calheiros Novaes de Novais studied philosophy at the Major Seminary of Maceió (AL) and theology at St. Joseph Seminary in Rio de Janeiro. He was ordained a priest on July 25, 1948 . He was teacher, spiritual director and vice-rector of the St. Joseph seminary in Rio de Janeiro as well as pastor of the parish of St. Francis Xavier (1956–1964).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 25, 1964 auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Mulia . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Jaime de Barros Câmara , on May 1st of the same year; Co- consecrators were Adelmo Cavalcante Machado , Archbishop of Maceió , and Othon Motta , Bishop of Campanha . His motto was Amen, Hallelujah .

Novaes de Novais was the council father of the last two sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Paul VI appointed him on October 20, 1966. to the Bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda . On November 17, 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.

Act

The Bishopric of Dom Waldyr was marked by disputes with social causes, especially during the time of the military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. As a youth bishop, he repeatedly campaigned for demonstrations against violence and political persecution and condemned the torture practice of the military and campaigned for the squatter and labor movement. He has received several human rights awards, including the Tiradentes Medal of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) in 1999 and the Brazilian Chamber of Representatives (Câmara dos Deputados do Brasil) Medal of Merit in Brasilia in 2007 .

The life story of Waldyr Calheiros Novaes was published in the book "O Bispo de Volta Redonda".
