Wall forum
The Wall Forum , formerly the police station , Am Wall 201 or Ostertorstraße 2/3, was the seat of the Bremen police . Today the building houses the Bremen City Library , a passage with restaurants and various dishes.
history
The former town house by the Bremen town hall had to be demolished for the construction of the new town hall . A police station had to be built beforehand. For this reason, the state archive and the registry office on the Tiefer were rebuilt after the turn of the century.
The proximity to the courthouse on Domsheide was decisive for the location of the police station . Classicist buildings have stood on the planned Am Wall 200/201 site since around 1800 , including the House of Union from 1801 and the Hurrelturm , which was used as a prison until the 19th century and which was still left of the old city wall. In 1905 these buildings were demolished.
On the trapezoidal property, two transverse wings and the inner courtyard as well as two smaller courtyards were completely enclosed by the development. At the turn of the century, after a competition, the police house was built from 1906 to 1908 according to plans by Carl Börnstein in the historicizing neo -renaissance style . A high base, the mezzanine floor and the two tower-like components at the arched main entrance to the wall gave the police house something defensive, they had the appearance of a city gate on the border with the old town, where the Bremen city wall and the Easter gate were once located. The plastered four-storey long sides with a restrained structure through bay windows and gable are an expression of an administration building.
The police house was also hit by bombs during World War II . The left gable of the tower next to the main entrance was lost. In order to maintain the symmetry, the right gable was also removed. Both towers received a steep hipped roof as a spire. Many individual details in the formal language of the Renaissance and early Baroque were partially eliminated after the war, both inside and out.
In June 1945, when the building was being used by the US occupation forces, an explosion occurred while bazookas and hand grenades were being loaded . Four US soldiers and 41 Germans died and 32 were seriously injured. Parts of the central wing were destroyed, including the crime museum and the forensic technology rooms.
Until 1999 the police headquarters were located in the police station and until the 1990s it was also the headquarters of the city office. The central police headquarters in Bremen was then housed in the Vahr district and the headquarters of the city office on Rembertiring and then in Stresemannstrasse / Steubenstrasse.
In 1992 the police station was placed under a preservation order.
Wall forum
The city sold the building to the Zechbau company in 2001 . In autumn 2002 the renovation of the police station began according to plans by Thomas Klumpp , and on October 6, 2004 the Wall Forum (also Forum Am Wall ) with a shopping arcade with shops and restaurants, the new central library and various courts such as the State Court , Administrative Court , Higher administrative court and social court as well as a police station opened. Zechbau sold the property to SachsenFonds in 2004 .
