Wallsend is a town in North Tyneside , Tyne and Wear , England with 42,842 residents. The place name ( Wall's End ) derives from the Roman Hadrian's Wall , which ended on the banks of the Tyne . After another eight kilometers, the river flows into the North Sea.

history

At the time of the Romans, the Segedunum fort stood in Wallsend , which secured the eastern end point of Hadrian's Wall . Today, Latin inscriptions, signs and signs in English-Latin “bilingual” remind of this part of the city's history.

In the late 19th century, several urban sanitary districts developed within the parish : Willington Quay , Howdon and the actual Wallsend. The first two merged under the Local Government Act 1894 to form the urban district (urban district) Willington Quay, the remaining part formed the parish of Willington in the Tynemouth Rural District . Wallsend was added in 1901 as a municipal borough and from 1910 also included Willington Quay and Willington and parts of the Longbenton parish .

Especially after the end of World War II and in the 1960s, Wallsend grew rapidly. The city and business center with the “Wallsend Forum” shopping area is located in the western part of the city. To the north is the older High Farm residential area and the newer Hadrian Lodge. The center is separated from the eastern urban area by the small Wallsend Burn watercourse coming from the northwest and flowing to the southeast Tyne. East of the Burn are the old district of Holy Cross with its medieval church ruins, the pre-war district of Rose Hill and the predominantly post-war residential area of Howdon. South of Howdon is Willington Quay, which was closely linked to shipping, but is now more industrial and residential. East Howdon is a small enclave between Willington Quay and North Shields.

The main shopping and thoroughfare is the High Street. At the north end of the street is Wallsend Green, a picturesque area with representative houses that are arranged around a leafy square. Behind the square, the Burn flows through the park from Hall Grounds to the public Wallsend Park.

The Wallsend Boys Club football club produced well-known players such as Alan Shearer , Lee Clark , Peter Beardsley and Michael Carrick . The city's best-known son is probably Sting.

A special feature worth mentioning is the signage for the Wallsend Metro Station, which is labeled in English and Latin with regard to the city's Roman past.

Coal mining

Much of the early industry in Wallsend was based on coal mining. Wallsends coal mining consisted of seven collieries that produced between 1778 and 1935. In the 1820s, the individual mines merged to form Russell's Colliery, which later became The Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Company Ltd. In 1924, 2183 miners were employed. The mining and railway engineer John Buddle , who was involved in the development of the Davy lamp , became famous.

Between 1767 and 1925, eleven major accidents were recorded in the Wallsend coal mine, in which 209 people were killed. On June 18, 1835, a gas explosion in a tunnel killed 102 miners, the youngest of whom was only eight years old. The victims were recovered and buried in the upper part of the St. Peters cemetery. A memorial plaque attached there reminds of the accident.
