Walter Barfuß (born February 1, 1937 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer, President of Austrian Standards International (1997–2002 its Vice-President), Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Wien Holding GmbH, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of E-Control and President of the Vienna Legal Society. From 2002 to 2007 Barfuß was Director General for Competition (Head of the Federal Competition Authority ).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1955, Walter Barfuß studied law at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1959. iur. PhD and in 1963 Dr. rer. pole. After passing the bar exam (1964), Walter Barfuß worked as a defense lawyer in criminal matters and in 1967 founded a partnership with Fritz Schönherr (law firm "Schönherr Barfuß Torggler & Partner"; since 2001 " Schönherr Rechtsanwälte "), to which he was a member until 2002. In 1969 he completed his habilitation as a university lecturer for constitutional law and administrative law at the University of Vienna. In 1976 he was given the professional title “ao. University Professor ", 1997 the professional title" o. University Professor ”awarded. In addition to teaching and examining at the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna (until 2003), Walter Barfuß was a university lecturer for food law at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Vienna from 1976-1993, and from 1995 a member (since 1998: Vice President) of the commission for a Postgraduate studies in European and international business law at the University of St. Gallen and from 1991 to 2001 member of the board of trustees of the " Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Legislative Practice and Application of Law" and also (1998-2009) member of the board of trustees of the "Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for European Law" . From 2002–2007 Walter Barfuß was "General Director for Competition" (head of the Federal Competition Authority with the rank of head of section). Walter Barfuß is President of Austrian Standards International , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Wien-Holding GmbH , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Energie-Control Austria for the regulation of the electricity and natural gas industry (E-Control) and President of the Vienna Legal Society.

Practical and academic focal points of Walter Barfuß’s work include constitutional law (in particular: organizational and procedural law as well as fundamental rights), administrative law (in particular: commercial administrative law) as well as areas of commercial law between private and public law, in particular antitrust and competition law.
