Walter Bolden

Walter Lee Bolden (* 17th December 1925 in Hartford (Connecticut) , † 7. February 2002 in Manhattan , New York City ) was an American jazz - drummer , arranger and composer .

Walter Bolden studied 1945-47 at the Julius Hartt School of Music in Hartford; worked from 1945 to 1948 at Gigi Gryce and from 1948 to 1950, among others, at Horace Silver . In the early 1950s he was in the bands of Stan Getz , Gerry Mulligan , Howard McGhee , George Wallington , Teddy Charles and Mat Mathews ; in the second half of the 1950s he worked with Sonny Rollins , Carmen McRae , Tony Scott , Miriam Makeba / Ray Bryant , Al Cohn / Zoot Sims , Abbey Lincoln and George Shearing, among others . In the 1960s he was often active outside of jazz, accompanying the singer Bobby Short , among others . In the 1970s he worked with his own formations; from 1974 to 1976 he was the coordinator of the Arts for New York Project Create . In the 1980s he played with Ray Bryant, Johnny Hartman , Junior Mance , Art Farmer and the Heath Brothers ; in the 1980s with Walter Bishop, Jr. and Annie Ross . Bolden also contributed some compositions to A. Taylor's book Wailers , such as “Mr. AT ”,“ Stressed Out ”and“ Harlem Mardi Gras ”.
