Walter Fischer (graphic designer)

Walter Fischer (born April 3, 1911 in Weißbach ; † June 7, 1982 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After graduating from elementary school, Walter Fischer completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer from 1925 to 1929 . From 1929 he was a member of the SPD . After 1933, as a member of illegal circles, he helped smuggle people persecuted by the Nazis across the then “green border” into Czechoslovakia.

In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1944 he deserted in Italy, defected to the partisans and took an active part in the partisan battles in northern Italy. He then studied in 1946 for a semester at the Art School in Modena and graduated with a diploma in painting and sculpture.

In autumn 1946 he went back to Germany on foot across the Alps. He became a member of the Kulturbund and a member of the SED . From 1952 to 1956 he was artistic director of DEWAG Dresden and Karl-Marx-Stadt. During his time in Dresden he made the acquaintance of Lea Grundig , Gerhard Richter , Eva Schulze-Knabe and Rudolf Bergander . From 1956 he worked as a freelance graphic artist and was also chairman of the Association of Visual Artists in Karl-Marx-Stadt until 1967 .
