Life

Walter Hess, the son of the businessman Friedrich Hess and his wife Anna née Müller, began an apprenticeship as a dental technician before taking the federal high school diploma in 1904 . He then turned to studying dentistry at the University of Zurich , where he passed the state examination in dentistry in 1908. He then worked for three years as a scientific assistant at the local dental institute, during which time he studied medicine and in 1911 earned the academic degree of Dr. with a dissertation on commercial intoxication. med. After further training between 1911 and 1913 abroad (Marseille and London), he took on a teaching position for conservative dentistry in Zurich in 1913, replacing the sick Prof. Machwürth at the then new institute on Zürichbergstrasse. In 1917 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in the field of conservative dentistry, in the same year he was appointed professor for operative dentistry, in 1929 he was promoted to associate professor , and in 1953 he retired . Between 1918 and 1965 he headed the Swiss Monthly Journal for Dentistry for 47 years , a task that André Schroeder took over afterwards .

When he warned in a lecture on the occasion of the scientific conference of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine in Wiesbaden in 1949 against the hasty introduction of drinking water fluoridation , "to prevent science from being discredited through hasty mass experiments", he was heavily criticized by Walter Drum because the "weight of his authority could inhibit promising caries prophylactic efforts in Germany."

Walter Hess, one of the leading Swiss dentists in the first half of the 20th century , was appointed a member of the Leopoldina in 1933. In addition, Hess held numerous honorary memberships in European and non-European stomatological societies.

Walter Hess married Hermine nee Schäublin in 1917. He died in 1980 at the age of 95 during a spa stay in Mammern.
