Walter Lehmbecker

Walter Lehmbecker (born December 10, 1898 in Zurow ; † January 5, 1980 in Kiel ) was a German senior teacher, local researcher and writer.

Life

Walter Lehmbecker (Evangelical Lutheran Confession) was born on December 10, 1898 in Zurow near Neukloster (Mecklenburg) as the son of master blacksmith Wilhelm Lehmbecker. At Easter 1917 he received his secondary school leaving certificate in Ludwigslust and began to study modern languages, history and philosophy. In 1918 he took part in the war. In 1919 he continued his studies in Rostock, Freiburg and Göttingen, took the state examination in Rostock in 1923 and passed the assessor examination in 1924. In May 1928 Walter Lehmbecker was appointed teacher at the Lyceum in Wismar . In 1929 he received his doctorate at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock with a thesis on Berkeley's "Theory of Facial Perception". After 1945 Lehmbecker taught modern languages ​​at the Humboldt-Gymnasium in Kiel.

In 1938 he published a collection of Low German poems (Mecklenburgische Lyrik), in 1953 selected stories by Friedrich Griese and Karl Trotsche , in 1967 a publication on the life and work of Rudolf Tarnow , in 1971 a selection of Low German poems by August Seemann and in 1978 a collection of Low German humor from the Land Fritz Reuters . In 1952, Lehmbecker founded a " Low German Book Series " at Verlag Krüger & Nienstedt in Hamburg and published the first three volumes. Lehmbecker published numerous articles on the history and literature of Mecklenburg in the magazines Mecklenburgische Monatshefte and Carolinum . A bibliography compiled by the Fritz Reuter Literature Archive Hans-Joachim Griephan Berlin lists approx. 300 publications by and about Walter Lehmbecker.

From 1952 to 1956 Lehmbecker was together with Bruno Hollmann editor for local history, literature, art and history of the magazine Der Mecklenburger , Hamburg, from 1964 to 1971 together with Gustav H. Piehler editor of the magazine Carolinum (from issue No. 40, summer half year 1964, up to issue No. 60/61, autumn 1971) and from 1972 to 1974 together with Peter Heitmann co-editor of the magazine “Carolinum” (issue No. 62, spring 1972, to issue No. 70, winter 1974/75).

Successor to Christian Jenssen , Lehmbecker was President of the Fritz Reuter Society from 1968 to 1978. In 1972, Lehmbecker was awarded the Mecklenburg Culture Prize of the Landsmannschaft Mecklenburg and in 1977 the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
