Walter Plunkett
Walter Plunkett (born June 5, 1902 in Oakland , California , † March 8, 1982 in Santa Monica ) was an American costume designer .
Life
Plunkett was studying law at the University of California when he became interested in the theater. He first played as an actor on student stages and also began to design the sets and costumes. Eventually he went to New York City , but was unable to make a name for himself as an actor , except for a few appearances in Greenwich Village . In 1925 he came back to California and tried to become an actor in Hollywood . However, his talent for costume design was greater and in 1927 he designed his first costumes for a Hollywood film. As early as the 1930s , as head costume designer at RKO, he was one of the most important costume designers in Hollywood. Despite the numerous successes of the films for which he designed the costumes, he received only one Oscar in the course of his career : in 1952 for An American in Paris , which he had to share with Orry-Kelly and Irene Sharaff . Plunkett only designed the ball costumes.
