Walter Schubert (born October 7, 1962 in Augustdorf ) is a former German handball player and today's coach . He played almost exclusively as a middle back player and completed 28 international matches for the German national team .

Career

Schubert began playing handball at TuSG Augustdorf and switched to TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen's B-youth team in February 1978/79 . A few months later, the team won the German championship. In the two finals against TSV Grabenstetten , Schubert scored a total of ten goals. With the A-youth in 1981, only the runner-up jumped out after two defeats against Eintracht Hildesheim . His first year with the seniors he then played for Dankersen's second team in the then third-class regional league . After the first team had been promoted to the Bundesliga again , Schubert became a fixture in the squad from the 1982/83 season . From 1984 to 1991 he played for TuRU Düsseldorf . There he was appointed to the national team in 1986, German runner-up in 1988 and IHF Cup winner a year later . Yet another year later, the team was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 1990/91 season he became player- coach after the resignation of coach Peter Sichelschmidt . At the end of the season, a win in the relegation against TV Hüttenberg celebrated the rise again. Schubert stayed in the second division through his move to SG Flensburg-Handewitt . In the first year he was able to celebrate promotion to the Bundesliga again. In the following year, the sporting descent was happily averted by the insolvency of TSV Milbertshofen . After coach Zvonimir Serdarušić was dismissed , Schubert led the training for a week before Anders Dahl-Nielsen took over the position. There were no competitive games during this period. After the season he went back to the second division and joined GWD Minden again . In November 1994 he suffered a serious knee injury and thus experienced his third promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of the 1994/95 season as a spectator. Then he ended his playing career.

He played 28 international matches for the German national team , including the 1987 B World Cup in Italy .

Trainer

Schubert went straight into the coaching business. The first stop was the regional league team HC 93 Bad Salzuflen . After he acquired the Trainer A license in 1996 and was unable to advance twice in a row with Bad Salzuflen, he moved to HSG Spenge / Lenzinghausen . There he was able to achieve promotion to the second Bundesliga in the 2000/01 season . In December 2006 he was released and in summer 2007 he accepted the offer of the regional league club HB Lemgo II . After just one season, however, they separated from him. Schubert's last position so far took place in September 2009 at the upper division TuS 97 Bielefeld-Jöllenbeck . He stayed there for over six years. He was fired in December 2015 and has been without a coaching job ever since.
