In the IHF Cup 1988/89 , 25 handball club teams took part, which had qualified for the competition in their home leagues in the previous season. It was the 7th edition of the IHF Cup. The defending champion was the Romanian club Minaur Baia Mare. In the domestic German duel in the final, TuRU Düsseldorf was able to prevail against ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder .
The competition started with 9 games in the 1st round, the winners advanced to the 2nd round and the quarter-finals followed. TSV St. Otmar St. Gallen , CD Cajamadrid, Hellerup IK , USM Gagny, ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder , Minaur Baia Mare and SKIF Krasnodar moved into the 2nd round by bye. All rounds including the final were carried out in a knockout system with a return leg. The winner of the final was the IHF Cup winner of the 1988/89 season.
