Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction
The Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction (German: Walter Scott Prize for historical novels) is a British literary prize that has been awarded since 2010. The award is named after the Scottish poet and writer Walter Scott , who was one of the most widely read authors of his time. Many of his historical novels - including the novel Waverly (1814) - are now considered classics of this genre and have become models for the work of other authors.
At 25,000 pounds sterling, the literary prize is one of the highest endowed in Great Britain. It was initiated by the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch , whose ancestors were closely associated with Walter Scott. The prize is awarded to novels published for the first time in Great Britain, Ireland or the British Commonwealth the year before. According to the regulations of this award, historical novels are those works whose main plot elements date back more than 60 years and thus usually fall within a period of time that the author did not experience as an adult. The announcement of which novel will be awarded the prize takes place every June during the Borders Book Festival in Melrose, Scotland .
