Walter Witzel

Walter Witzel (born January 8, 1949 in Bückeburg ) is a Baden-Württemberg politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 1992 to 2006 he represented his party in the Freiburg-Ost constituency in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament .

Life and work

Witzel studied mathematics , physics and education in Göttingen , Stuttgart and Freiburg. In 1976 he started teaching at the Goethe-Gymnasium in Freiburg; He practiced this profession (to a small extent) in addition to his parliamentary mandate. After completing his work in the state parliament, Witzel returned to school from 2006 to 2011. Witzel received his doctorate in 1980 on the subject of "Teaching Proof in Mathematics Classes".

Political career

Witzel has been a member of the Greens since 1982. Before that, he was active in the Third World Information Center and the Öko-Institut . From 1984 to 2001 he was a local councilor in Merzhausen , from 1984 to 1992 district councilor in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district . In 2009 he was re-elected to the Merzhausen municipal council and was confirmed in this mandate in 2014. Since 2014 he has been chairman of the local council group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen.

The main topics of his work as a member of the state parliament from 1996 to 2006 were energy policy , questions of ecology and ecological management. Witzel was energy policy spokesman for his group . Other areas of work included SME policy , development cooperation and housing policy .

Together with Dieter Seifried , he published Das Solarbuch in 2000 . Facts, Arguments, Strategies , which appeared in the third, revised and expanded edition in 2007. In 2010 this book was also updated in English: Renewable Energy. The Facts (published by Earthscan).

From November 2006 to 2016, Walter Witzel was state chairman (of Baden-Württemberg) in the German Wind Energy Association (BWE).

Private

Witzel is Protestant, married and has two children and two grandchildren. He lives in Merzhausen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.
