The Wambach is a right-hand, around 9 km long tributary of the Dickelsbach on the boundary of the cities of Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg .

Its sources are in the nature reserve "Auberg and Oberwambach" (MH-014) on the Mülheimer Auberg, part of the southern Ruhr heights , at 90 m above sea level. The stream mostly flows through sparsely populated rural areas and forests. Some sections of its valley have been preserved and protected; other parts of its lower reaches, in particular, have been greatly altered by human intervention.
The Wambach springs on which the watch facing away from the slope of Aubergs and away approximately the first few kilometers at right angles to the west of the extending here in south-north direction Ruhrtal. It flows through the Saarner Mark and the Broich-Speldorfer Wald . The course of the stream and parts of the adjacent forest form the NSG “Wambachtal und Oembergmoor” (MH-004). The Wambach flows through it with a slight gradient, initially still meandering strongly . Later the stream changes direction and now runs southwest. He passes under the BAB 3 and reaches the duck catch , a lake created by excavation.
After leaving the duck catching area, the Wambach changes to the Duisburg area and now turns to the northwest. After a good 7 km of his run, he reaches the Sechs-Seen-Platte in Duisburg-Wedau . It flows through one after the other through the Wolfssee , the Masurensee and the Wambachsee , only to flow into the Dickelsbach immediately after leaving the latter at 35 m above sea level .
The approximately 8.9 kilometers long course of the Wambach ends approximately 62 meters below the origin of its right source brook, so it has an average bed gradient of about 7 ‰.
Catchment area
The 12.096 km² catchment area of the Wambach extends from the Selbecker Terrassenland over the Lintorfer sand terraces to the Wedau-Tiefenbruch Markwälder and is drained through it via the Dickelsbach and the Rhine to the North Sea.
It borders
- in the east to the catchment area of the Mühlenbach , which flows into the Ruhr ,
- in the south to that of the Haubach , which flows into the Dickelsbach.
- in the northwest to that of the Dickelsbach directly and
- in the north to that of the Schengerholzbach , which flows into the Ruhr.
In the eastern part of the catchment area, agriculture and settlements dominate, while the western part is predominantly forested.

nature and environment
The landscape in the area of the Sechs-Seen-Platte has been changed over a large area by the excavation of gravel and sand, the original course of the Wambach can no longer be seen here. The area has now been completely recultivated and forms a valuable local recreation area. Only the name "Im Wambachgrund" still reminds us of the once rural cultural landscape.
